Kiting

Diamond prism in the sky,
I cannot fly you though I try,
But when I start to wind you in,
Then you begin to dance again,
And yet once more, I can’t resist,
But let you spin from my grip, twist—
Dragging the ground, I bring you in;
Then you begin to flit again,
And pair of dancers, you and I,
Spin in and out twixt land and sky.

If you’ve ever tried to fly a kite, I suspect you’ll understand. I wrote this after one of my many fruitless kite-flying endeavors a few years back. Kites are such a tease, making you think the wind is finally going to be strong enough for them to soar with each tantalizing tug right as you decide for the millionth time to reel them in for the day.
